Letter to EPA Administrator from the Louisiana Bucket Brigade:
Oil spill communities have been experiencing odors and health complaints consistent with exposure to oil spill chemicals. At the same time, EPA is reporting “typical” air quality for the areas monitored. This disconnect reflects gaps in the current monitoring and communication plans employed by EPA that must be remedied.
Recommendations:
Expand monitoring to includes Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds (SVOCs)
Monitor wind patterns
Obtain all relevant data on pollutant releases
Ensure public disclosure
Communicate monitored results on a website
Let’s go EPA!
